With the winter season quickly falling upon us, we’ve compiled a list of some of our favourite things to do in Christchurch during the chillier months. From afternoons in to big days out, there’s something suited for all ages.
1. Christmas markets and events
The magnificent Highcliffe Castle is hosting a wonderfully festive market on both the 26th and 27th November 2022, 10-4pm. It’s a brilliant day to meet talented local sellers and buy their creations. The castle will be dressed from floor to ceiling in amazing decorations – tickets are just £3 for admission and children go for free!
The Yuletide Festival also opens on 25th November with a spectacular light show joined by the mayor of Christchurch. New this year in Saxon Square, open all the way through December until Christmas Eve – the Gobbledegook theatre group will entertain the crowds while you wander the Christmas market stalls and finally make your way to the stage to enjoy the live music.
And if you’re looking for some evening festivities, you’ll love the Christchurch Living Calendar – held across different locations each night at 6:15pm. Gather your friends and family for pop-up performances to support local charities. Take a look at their websites to find out where each night will be held up to Christmas day.
2. Theatrical entertainment
Spend an evening at The Regent with sugar plum fairies in a glittering kingdom. Captivate yourself in the live showing of The Nutcracker by the Royal Ballet. Combining the thrill of the fairy tale with the elegance of classical dancing, it’s a night to remember. Tickets are £15 per person on Thursday 8th and Sunday 11th December 2022.
3. Family fun at Snowtrax
An amazing day out for family and friends, Snowtrax Alpine activity centre is filled with plenty to keep you and your family entertained all day long. From skiing to snowboarding and even ski bobbing there’s something for all ages. And not to forget, the tasty restaurant and coffee shop are there to keep you fueled in between your activities. It’s open seven days a week, and on Saturdays, they open from as early as 8:30am and close at 10pm.
4. Boutique shopping
In Christchurch there are many unique independent shops to explore, so here are a few of our recommendations.
- The Emporium is a shopping centre filled with an array of different shops and cafes, as well as many vintage, fashion and handmade craft shops.
- Jaylo’s Boutique is a women’s clothing store selling lots of international brands that you won’t find on your average high street.
- And lastly, we have Saxons square shopping centre, a hidden gem filled the town’s assortment of cafes, boutiques and stores. They also have a great calendar of events such as a variety of different markets.
5. Winter walks in Christchurch
Christchurch is filled with dozens of lovely scenic routes, here are a couple of our favourites (dog friendly, of course).
The Old Harry rocks are one of the most famous landmarks in Dorset, but certainly quieter during the colder months, when the crisp sea air and winter sunshine make for a delightful stroll along the coast. Start at the National Trust car park and simply follow the signs to ‘Old Harry’ and enjoy the breathtaking scenery.
Wareham Forest Woodlark Trail is a 2-mile route through one of the largest valleys in England. Starting and ending at the Sirka car park, on your way around you can stop at the pop-up cafe or enjoy a picnic on the benches, making this walk ideal for families. You’re even in with a high chance of spotting some incredible wildlife!
And one that is right on the doorstep of Captain’s Club, visit picturesque Hengistbury Head, filled with walking routes that lead to spectacular and panoramic views of the nature reserve, Christchurch harbour, Bournemouth Bay and across to the Isle of Wight. Also a great place to take your furry friends for a walk along the beach.
