There’s something truly wonderful about this time of year. The days are growing longer and the end of winter is finally in sight. And nothing puts a spring in your step quite like seeing the first snowdrops come into bloom.
Here are some of the best places to see them in Dorset.
Kingston Lacy
One of the most famous places to see snowdrops in the local area is Kingston Lacey. This beautiful Venetian Palace in the Dorset countryside is surrounded by blankets of the white flowers come late January. And on 26th February, you can even embark on a guided walk with the gardeners to discover more about their history at the estate.
Lawsbrook
Lawsbrook garden in Shillingstone has been part of the National Garden Scheme for over 10 years and has regular open days throughout the year. It’s spread over six acres and features over 130 different tree species. It also happens to be one of the best places to see snowdrops in the area. The next open day is Sunday 23rd February, when the gardens are open from 10am – 5pm.
Affpuddle
The charming village of Affpuddle is just a few miles east of Dorchester. It’s home to beautiful thatched cottages, a 13th century church, and has the River Piddle running right through it. If you’re passing by, it’s well worth making a pit stop for a short stroll as you’ll find lots of the banks filled with snowdrops in springtime.
Upton Country Park
With a majestic Georgian Mansion, acres of gardens to explore, tea rooms, and even play areas, Upton Country Park is the perfect place to visit with the family. It’s open seven days a week, but in February and March, the botanical gardens are blanketed with beautiful snowdrops.
Tyneham
Often known as ‘Dorset’s lost village’, Tyneham has been deserted since it was evacuated during WWII. Many of the original buildings remain, and the church and school buildings have now been restored and have exhibitions around the village’s past. It’s a peaceful, picturesque place, particularly during the end of winter when snowdrops begin to emerge in the churchyard and surrounding green spaces.
